CVG and Polygon has released some hands-on previews of Max Payne 3. Below you will find some quotes and links to read the articles for yourself.

"In a sequence worthy of a Ringo Lam film, Max hurtles through corridors avoiding sniper fire, cuts through several rooftops while dropping bad guys en route and drops down on a crew of thugs through the roof of a chopshop. The environments he blazes through - the dilapidated apartments, the slush-covered roofs and a booze-slick bar - look disgustingly seedy. It's almost as though someone took the interior of Club Ragnarok from the first Max Payne game, and expanded it to the length of three city blocks."

"Cover, when it's available, is just a place to wait to die. These hiding spots are invariably chewed away by gun shots and almost always give your enemies time to regroup and flank you. The only way to succeed in Max Payne 3 is to scramble and dive, to bullet time and clear a room."

Max Payne 3 is the focus of Polygon's "good game" column as well.

"'In this game ... we are not tackling the issue of addiction' date=' but we are looking at the character and actions of a man who has problems with substances, but also a lot of other problems," he said. "There is a subtle but important difference. It's a shooter about a drunk, somewhat morose, widowed ex-cop, trying to find some kind of peace with himself. It is not a game about the realities of being a drunk in terms of the need to drink. It is a game about being Max Payne.'

In layering a character study about a man warped by the violence he has both witnessed and inflicted, onto a violent video game, Rockstar has created something surprisingly complex."

The CVG preview is much better, loads of info, loads of details, those guys sure look like they're crazy about this game. I'm not suprised, I'm just jelly that they were able to play the game!

It's a shame they weren't able to test out multiplayer, I'd shootdodge for some new, juicy details about it.

I enjoyed reading through both the previews as well as the "good game" column article. It does sound like Rockstar has outdone itself with this game once again. It's crazy to actually see reading excitement and anticipation out of all these previews about Max Payne 3. There must be something very very big and awesome within this game, the games narrative, the story, the gameplay. I wonder why Rockstar passed 1 hour at the beginning for the press to see ... what spoilers could they've talked of, maybe from one of the previous games in the Max Payne franchise or maybe it's to the story of the 3rd entry, I don't know. The fact that they weren't able to get hands-on time with the games multiplayer is really bad, but I think we get to see more about the multiplayer soon.

I imagine the first chapter must be set in New York, so it'll tell why Max wants to leave Brazil and why some gunmen are still chasing him. I think the first takes of the "Cinametics" gameplay trailer was actually taken from Chapter 1.

I don't really think that the first chapter is set in New York, I more think it's Sao Paulo where the story kicks off. Rockstar said that there'll be flashbacks all through the story which picks up the events in New York, how Max got to work for the Brancos. This should be one of the very first flashbacks. Also I read that Max is in the apartment in Sao Paulo in a very first chapter of the game, taking painkillers, drinking, et cetera.

You're talking about the intro CVG was writing about, so that's not the first chapter. We can't tell really, we can only speculate. We'll see who's right in about two weeks. :)

Yeah, we'll see in two weeks but still, kicking off the story being in Sao Paulo would add something special to the storytelling I think. So I'll stick with the version being in Max's apartment in Sao Paulo at the beginning of the story ...
