What did you guys think of it. I didn't think it was too bad, but it could have been soooo much better. So much stuff they could have put in there but didn't.

I can't go into details because when I saw the movie it had been at least 4 years since I last played the games, so I'd forgotten a lot of stuff. I'm planning on playing bits of the first two games again so I can remember stuff that happened.

What were your thoughts on it?

Honestly, compared to the games, it was horrible. They added a lot of stuff they shouldn't have, yes, but they also didn't include enough either. Mona was in it the entire time which is kind of bullshit as she

, so they're probably planning a Max Payne 2 movie. Which I hope they include more game specific shit. I was like what the fuck with all that angel shit until I realized that it was the drugs.

Also why the fuck would they put him in cold case that's fucking ridiculous. Should of just been like in the game where he goes in the DEA with Alex instead of Alex being his old partner in the NYPD. Fucking stupid, but whatever.

Was fairly decent, Should have stuck to the story from the game. Could have used better visual effects etc.

The overall dark feel was good, but that angels/demon thing they tried out looked sketchy. I remember being a bit disappointed that bout the lack of a good flashy gun battle in it

Not bad, not bad. Saw it a while ago so I don't remember :P But could've been better, soon we may be seeing a GTA movie (A new one, not the 70's one)

I didn't think the movie was bad at all. Mark Wahlberg was convincing in the role, actually. My initial impression was that he would never fit the role of Max Payne, but his performance was surprisingly good.

I got this movie today.

Somehow.

Should I wait till after I've cmpleted both games to watch it? Just 1? or does it not matter? Is it linear to, or after, or before?

Cheers in advance.

I kind of liked it. Mainly because Mark Wahlberg was in it, because we are both Massholes. =) I'd give it 3 1/2 out of 5.

I could go on and on about how they ruined this movie but it mainly comes down to:

--Pointless plot changes which did not enhance the story in any way and certainly seemed a step down from the game's.
--Pointless characters added (Owen Green, Natasha, that Jamaican drug lord, that freaking tatoo artist, that guy who worked at Aesir with the file, etc.)
--Removal of fun characters like pretty much everyone who was in the Mafia such as Rico Muerte, Frankie The Bat Niagara, or the Trio. Also they cut out Boris Dime, who had a single awesome line in the first game.
Spoiler
--Removal of EXTREMELY IMPORTANT CHARACTERS like Alfred Woden , Vladimiar Lem, and Vinnie Gognitti. No idea how to do the second movie without the first two at least.
--Removal of awesome locales (Cold Steel mainly).
--Focus of villainy removed from Nicole Horne to freaking
Spoiler
(though the supposed sequel is going to seek to rectify that). He was acknowledged in the first game to simply be a "cardboard cutout" of a villain, put in there only to serve as a miniboss and plot device. Why they decided to make him the end-all focus of the plot is beyond me.
--Foreboding narration filled with noir metaphor only occurs at the beginning with two seconds of it shoehorned in right before the credits
--The credits themselves felt outsourced! Exploding guns out of nowhere!
--There was a large portion of the movie that didn't have much action in it (somewhere around a 40-45 minute segment, and without the monologues telling us how Max feels it felt really boring)

Some things that they seemed to be on the right track with:

--Set design was pretty great.
--Valkyr hallucination wasn't bad, though I wanted more junkies screaming "THE FLESH OF FALLEN ANGELS!" and ranting about an inability to know whether they're dead or not.
--What gunfights were in it seemed pretty good to me, there should simply have been more of them, and an attempt should've been made to include some of the more epic things that were in the game, such as the obelisk collapsing at Woden's manor or the
Spoiler
.

Basically I can't figure out why they would drop a full-length narrative and plot and completely come up with their own stuff that was inferior by anyone's judgment. If I paid millions of dollars to buy the intellectual rights to a franchise, I would try to use quite a bit more than just the name. It's pretty bad when something like Punisher: War Zone feels a million times more entertaining than something which actually had a plot in the first place to build on.

(Check out Punisher War Zone by the way, it's so bad it's good! Absolutely fun movie in all respects if you get what they were trying to do)

Max Payne the movie much like any other video game based movie is classified as F A I L U R E.

Yet, unlike all the other game based movies it's a movie I would re-watch (in fact I watched it again 2 days ago on HBO).

Short review:

GOOD:
-Nice design. Including character re-design.
-Tries to be original.
-Well picked actors (except the main character, Mark Wahlberg fits the role physically but the voice... nah. Max's voice was grim but it was clear, I can barelly understand what Wahlberg is saying in the movie). Especially for Hensley and Bravura.
-Has some inspired lines (I especially like that guy Lincoln's).

BAD:
-It was rushed.
-It's too short.
-Many mistakes, for example: In the gun dive scene, Max only dives ONCE and he manages to reload and fire the shotgun TWICE wile the guy shooting at him with an automatic only manages to fire 2 bullets! I mean sigh even Superman doesn't have those reflexes. Or in the suicide scene, Owen flies out of the building like he was actually pulled away, I mean, weren't those bird things suppose to be just in his mind? The list goes on...
-Has easter eggs that relate to the game (like the Gognitti Storage thing), most people might find that funny but I don't. It's bad enough that the movie is made after a game, but trying to relate to it? That just doesn't make sense...
-Ending is stupid.
-Max doesn't f*ck Mona...I don't f*ck Mona :-(

Etc...
